Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA)

The Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA) aims to help university teachers and investigators of any country who, on grounds of religion, political opinion or race, are unable to carry out their work in their own country. Of those supported in the 30s and 40s, 18 became Nobel Laureates, 16 were knighted and 121 were elected as Fellows to The British Academy or The Royal Society.

John Lyons Young Research Project

John Lyon's Charity supported the Young Researchers Project, a one year project designed to engage Key Stage 2 students with the necessary research strategies to prepare them for secondary school and beyond. In the secondary school curriculum and throughout most subjects, young people are required to provide research based evidence in order to gain higher results. However, although research can raise attainment, there are no set curriculum guidelines on how to engage young people in ‘successful research'.

Same Sex Attraction 2010

A cluster of psychotherapists in Britain believe there’s a cure for homosexuality. Except that this evangelical group, along with other international conversion therapy movements, prefer to use the term Same Sex Attraction (SSA), and according to them gays can convert to ‘straightness’ through therapy.

However, a group of young lesbian/gay/bisexuals (LGB), who are quite comfortable being who they are, teamed up to put together an exciting performance project that touched precisely on this subject and their own “coming out” stories.

Aimhigher Summer Schools

As a specialist and vocationally focussed Higher Education (HE) provider, we feel our presence in the summer school scheme was of benefit to those who are ‘vocational learners' but who also benefit from knowledge around how the vocational training system works within our field. Our Summer School aimed to promote the minority subject of scenic art, as well as the wide range of drama/theatre courses which focus on the vocational.

XCEL Student of the Year

The Xcel Student of the Year Awards are designed to reward outstanding achievement and raise aspirations of students from all backgrounds. This was the first ever student award ceremony to celebrate the achievements of students from all backgrounds throughout the UK.

Office of Fair Access Summer Schools

Each summer Central Connects (formerly the School of Professional and Community Development) now offers a range of community courses, subsidised by Central, to develop fair access and widening participation. A third of all student fees goes towards bursaries and widening participation.

In 2008 the following courses/projects took place:

Education & Community Projects

At Central, we undertake outreach work to a range of community venues and equally organise community events. We aim to provide social and economic benefit for our community friends and partners.

We view the Central family as being from the cradle to the grave and actively seek funding, sponsors and opportunities that will enable us to maximise benefit for participants and inclusion in work at Central for community members who may not consider that Higher Education or conservatoire delivery a key priority in their lives.

Jack Petchey Youth Theatre

Thanks to a generous grant given to Central by the Jack Petchey Foundation, ‘Gifted and Talented' young people from Brent, Hillingdon and Ealing had the unique opportunity to experience this training and gain an understanding of the discipline required for performance, play-making and theatre during their time at Central.
