If your funds are coming from outside the UK
Your fees must be paid by the due dates mentioned in your offer letter. Further to this, in order to satisfy UK Border Agency requirements, upon applying for a student visa you will need to provide evidence that you are able to pay the full tuition fees, plus have sufficient money to cover your living expenses for at least eight months.
There may be substantial charges on bank transfers and Eurocheque payments, both in the UK and the country of origin and the School will re-invoice you for any such charges that it incurs.
The notes below are to help you distinguish whether you not you are eligible to pay the EU Student or International Student levels of tuition fees.
Fee status classification
The Education Fees and Awards Regulations 1997 govern the definition of Home (UK/EU) and Overseas students for the purpose of fees. These regulations enable individual institutions to classify the fee status of students.
Individual students must satisfy the institution that they meet the criteria to be classified as Home status for the purpose of fees. We make the final decision on whether you are a Home UK, Home EU, or Overseas student, based on the facts which you provide. It is important to give us all the information which is required to make the correct fee assessment.
In order to qualify as a Home UK student, you must have been "ordinarily resident" in the UK for the full three year period immediately before the beginning of your course. The period ends on the following dates before the course starts:
- 1 September (if the course begins in the autumn)
- 1 January (if the course begins in the winter)
- 1 April (if the course begins in the spring or summer).
A student should be classified as a Home student if he or she can demonstrate:
a. that s/he was settled in the United Kingdom within the meaning of the Immigration Act 1971 on his or her relevant date (described above).
b. that s/he has been ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom and Islands for the specified three year period preceding their course.
c. that no part of the three year period of residence in (b) above was wholly or mainly for the purpose of receiving fulltime education.
Exceptions
You may qualify for the Home UK or Home EU rate of fee if:
- You are a national of a European Union (EU) country, or you are the child of an EU national, and you have been ordinarily resident in any of the European Economic Area (EEA) countries for the three years before the course, apart from absences for the purpose of temporary employment. You must not have been living in the EEA during any of that period wholly or mainly for educational purposes.
- You have been granted refugee status or exceptional leave to remain by the British government as a result of an application for asylum, and have remained ordinarily resident in the UK since that status was given. This exception also applies to the spouse and children of those people granted refugee status or exceptional leave to remain.
- You are an EEA national and resident in the UK as a migrant worker, or the child of an EEA migrant worker and you are resident in the UK as a consequence of your parent's employment. You must have been ordinarily resident in the EEA for the three years before the course, and ordinarily resident at no time during the three years mainly or wholly for the purpose of receiving full time education.
- You are a resident of a British Overseas Territory.
Those who had the right to settle and live in the UK before the three year period (including UK nationals), but chose to live elsewhere (other than for purely temporary employment) are considered to be Overseas students. Details are available from the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA)
The following factors are not in themselves sufficient to warrant a Home fee classification:
- possession of UK nationality
- ownership of property in the UK
- employment in the UK
- payment of UK taxes.
