Central introduces £120k in scholarships for 2012 entrants

The Central School of Speech & Drama, University of London, has announced that it will make available over £120k in scholarships and bursaries in order to support its students in the coming academic year.

Aside from a number of bursaries made available as fee-waivers to support undergraduate students facing particular financial hardship, the School is also delighted to announce the availability of over 40 new scholarships for its Masters’ programmes, to be awarded on the basis of exceptional merit, funded by a mixture of private and charitable donations.

"Our aim is to ensure that Central is an elite, but not an elitist institution, and we are appealing to our friends, alumni and stakeholders to help ensure that," said Principal Professor Gavin Henderson.  "Gifts will support a mix of recruitment and retention goals, including rewarding excellence as well as recognising financial need."

A number of new donors came via the recently re-launched Pivot Club, a membership-based organisation originally started by alumni Sir Laurence Olivier and Dame Peggy Ashcroft in the 1920s to raise money for talented students without means.

"Investing in scholarships is part of our history, our legacy, and is core to Central's contemporary mission to put students at the heart of everything we do," said Professor Ross Brown, Dean of Studies. "Investing in students helps to guarantee the future of theatre making."
