Theatre Applications conference: Performance with a Purpose

Serious theatre people these days are increasingly interested in theatre that is ‘applied’. Theatre’s fastest growing activity it may be, but what is ‘applied theatre’? What is theatre applied to? Who benefits from the application? Can it change the world?

At the Theatre Applications conference delegates from across the globe will address these questions and many more. In a world of immigration and diversity, fundamentalism and commitment, increasing division between rich and poor, this is theatre with a social agenda.

Theatre Applications is about theatre in schools, communities, prisons and therapies, about theatre’s purposes, ideals, uses and, yes, abuses. Academics will be joined by performers and makers to look at, talk about and experience a theatre that aims to change our lives.

Theatre Applications will be held at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama Wednesday 21 - Friday 23 April 2010.

In keeping with Central’s conferences, Theatre Applications is both an industry expo and a sharing of new thinking, where cutting-edge practices and new scholarship connect.
