Kolkata Students Win Places on Central's Youth Theatre Programme

Four students from Kolkata, India were awarded places on Central School of Speech & Drama's Youth Theatre for Actors programme. Having won in the categories of Best Actress (Debalina Choudhury, M.P. Birla Foundation HS School); Best Actor (Shreyansh Rohatgi, Apeejay School); Best Student Coordinator (Preetam Mukherjee, Young Horizons School); and Best Teacher Coordinator (Susmita Duari, M.P.Birla Foundation HS School), the students will spend this summer studying acting, voice, movement, and the interpretation of text.

The Annual Inter-School Drama Festival is presented by Central and supported by the British Council.

'We hope that this festival will bring forth the talent these young people have and encourage them to develop it further,' says Sujata Sen, British Council Director East India. 'The opportunity to do a summer course at the Central School of Speech & Drama will be a valuable one.' The British Council has a long history of supporting theatre and it was with this initiative that several up-and-coming celebrities of Bollywood and theatre had their first stint in acting.

Bruce Wooding, Central’s Head of Professional and Community Development said, 'This festival offers a unique opportunity for Central to share ideas and knowledge with local educators. Theatre and drama can be used to enhance the learning experience of every student. Students will be exposed to "collaborative competition”, enabling them to realise their potential in areas such as strategic thinking, teamwork, decision making, leadership, cultural and artistic awareness, confidence building and professionalism.'

Preparation for the Annual Inter-School Drama Festival 2010 is in full swing with 44 schools already having registered. The finals will be held on 7 August 2010 in Kolkata.
