Freak shows, oddities, theories and anomalies. This provoking subject matter is the focus of Kleinkunst 3 – the latest in a series of events that explore short performances; specifically, side and variety shows. The series is produced by the Central School of Speech and Drama’s Centre for Excellence in Training for Theatre (CETT) in association with the Roundhouse theatre.
Kleinkunst 3 offers a historical commentary around bodies, normativity and image. Such freak shows have been re-appropriated within contemporary queer and crip circles to subvert and twist this 19th century phenomena for their own edgy and controversial ends.
Guests will enter into a fantastically designed atmosphere that evokes the underworld of Kleinkunst. Audience members will be offered table service and are invited to join the discussion. It will be held at Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Road, London NW1 8EH on 20 April 2010. Guests should arrive at 6pm for a 6.30 start. The event will close at 10.15pm.
Kleinkunst began as a feminist neo-burlesque symposium at the Central School of Speech and Drama back in October 2007. At the time, lecturer Liselle Terret felt there was a need for critical debate on the subject, as many burlesque performers were focussed on stripping, rather than using the body to make satirical comment on everyday life.
Jessica Bowles, head of CETT comments: “We welcome the artists, students and thinkers who will be joining us to explore and shape perspectives on the form.”
Those interested in joining the event on 20 April should contact Laura Douglas, CETT, on +44 (0) 20 7449 1647.
