Central has a distinguished track record of research in Applied and Social theatre.
It currently has seven PhD students working in the applied field and a number of staff whose research incorporates areas of applied aesthetics, participatory practices, theatre and care, arts, health and wellbeing, and cultural education. Research in this area aims to promote new forms of knowledge in the applied field, as well as to work closely with industry partners. Grants from the Wellcome Trust and the AHRC have funded specific projects on transgender identities and the politics of place.
Applied theatre at Central is a hub of creative expertise for the ‘application’ of performance for new audiences/participants within, for example, heritage contexts and museums and specialises in developing research initiatives in partnership with non-arts collaborators such as social worker scholars and researchers in the field of nursing and medicine.
