2008

University of London, UK
This isn't just any ordinary conference - we invite
you to expect the unexpected... look out for spontaneous tea parties,
mysterious 'happenings' in cupboards, banquets in Moroccan tents, 'guerrilla'
light installations and much more...
Expect fresh, honest dialogue that cuts across the conventional barriers
between academics, students and industry professionals with guest speakers
from around the world, including great theatre makers like Anne
Bogart and Pamela Howard.
What is the theatre made of? What is its matter, and what is the
matter with it?
Roundtables - with topics including 'Greening the Theatre Industries',
'Creative Enterprise' and 'Street Arts', and with the opportunity
to network across these areas in Open Space sessions.
Workshops – from practitioners including award-winning sound designer
Gareth Fry and puppeteer Rene Baker
(Institut del Teatre, Barcelona).
Residencies and Performances - with theatre makers and graduate companies-in-residence
from the Puppet Centre and The Central School
of Speech and Drama.
Exhibitions – be the first to see the results of an exciting collaboration
between the Bartlett School of Architecture and Central
to create designs for a sustainable theatre, and to walk inside the Costume
Archive.
Over the last few months, CETT has hosted innovative artists such as
Blast Theory, Manuel Vason and ORLAN,
and the conference builds on this momentum, being the place where people who are
passionate about theatre can meet and talk. CETT actively support the
documentation of curriculum work at Central and have facilitated a variety
of projects including recent work with extraordinary theatre companies
like Handspring, Kinetika and Complicite.
The conference will be fully documented and archived by an international
team of dramaturges. Sustainability is a key theme of the conference
and CETT are placing a strong emphasis on the event's legacy. Planned
future events and networks ensure that the relationships and ideas
developed at the conference are able to grow and benefit all who take
part.
Booking will open on
the 18th February.

About CETT
The Centre for Excellence in Training for Theatre (CETT) was created by
The Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. It works to provide a national resource
for vocational performing arts training and learning, a focus for theatre
research and scholarship, and a site for collaboration, nationally and
internationally, between industry, Higher Education and specialist training
providers.
Since its inception in 2005, CETT has hosted several events which have
focussed on different aspects of theatre; Verbatim Theatre, Postdramatic
Theatre, Feminist Neo-Burlesque and Puppetry. In addition, CETT have welcomed
guests including Anatoly Smeliansky, Anoja Weerasinghe and Hans-Thies
Lehmann, who have spoken about their work and practices.
CETT actively supports the documentation of curriculum work at The
Central School of Speech and Drama, and has facilitated a variety of projects,
including recent work with Handspring, Kinetika and Complicite.
Also on-going Enquiries curated by CETT include investigations
into key concerns in the theatre profession - sustainability, street arts
and documentation. There is involvement in projects on issues faced by
students in theatre training - the questions of access; dis/ability; dyslexia
and body image. These investigations are run in collaboration with
sister institutions in HE and specialist training, and with theatre and
industry professionals.
